Soo Jeung LEE, Yangson Kim (2011). Internationalization of universities in South Korea: Focusing on international networking strategies and research performance. The Changing Academic Profession International Conference.

Numerous universities in South Korea are trying to raise competitiveness and enhance international research performance with strategies for internationalization in the era of globalization. As the perspectives of internationalization are enlarged from personal mobility to academic exchange, international relations between scholars, departments and universities are becoming more important. In this study, the effect of networking strategies on international research performance was examined. The data for this study was drawn from KEDI, MEST, and CAP data. The quantitative analysis method was used such as logistic regression analysis and zero-inflated negative binominal regression analysis. It was found that universities in the capital and its environs, and research-intensive universities were related positively to collaboration with international colleagues, and the number of SCI∙SSCI∙A&HCI articles was higher in research-intensive universities than education-intensive universities. It was established that the networking strategies at the department level were positively associated with the likelihood of collaboration with international colleagues and research performance. It was also established that the networking strategies at the department level are more important factors to enhance the international research performance than the networking strategies at the university level.
