About

The Center for Higher Education and Knowledge Studies (CHEKs) is the research center for studying knowledge as well as Higher Education Studies. The CHEKs is a network-based research center which invites scholars from all over the world as co-researchers. In addition, CHEKs is actively networking with internationally recognized research centers and institutes including the East-West Center in Hawaii, University of Hong Kong, and Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research, Instituto Superior Tecnico. Our main research themes include higher education studies in general (governance, finance, academic profession, and policy studies) and broad range of knowledge studies (knowledge and social development, knowledge and school curriculum, contextualization of knowledge, etc.).

Funding Supports

CHEKs receives most of its funding from the National Research Foundation of Korea. Its initial research fund supported by the NRF from 2010 to 2012 under the title of the Social Science Korea (SSK) and the center also receives its funding from various projects and sources.

  • Director

The Director of CHEKs is Professor Jung Cheol Shin. Professor Shin is the principal investigator of the center and he has been studying knowledge production, higher education systems, institutional performance, academic professions, ranking and quality assurance issues. For details: click here
  • Researchers

Dr. Ji Sun Jung obtained her Ph.D. degree from Seoul National University in 2011 and currently working as an associate professor at Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong. Her current research focuses on academic profession, doctoral education, and master’s education and employment. She is a co-editor of Higher Education Research & Development.
Dr. Soo Jeung Lee completed her Ph.D. degree from Seoul National University in 2014 and currently working as a associate professor at Sejong University, Korea. Her area of specialization is research performance and knowledge transfer, academic profession, and university and labor market.
Dr. Hoonho Kim has received his Ph.D. degree from Seoul National University in 2014, and is currently working as an associate professor at Kongju National University, Korea. His research interest areas include university evaluation, higher education finance, policy for small-scale schools.
Dr. Yangson Kim completed her Ph.D. degree from Seoul National University in 2015 and currently working as a associate professor at Hiroshima University, Japan. Her research area includes internationalization, academic profession, higher education policy and system in comparative perspective.
Dr. Seung Jung Kim completed her Ph.D. degree from Seoul National University in 2017 and currently working as a research institute for higher education, korean council for university education. Her research area is doctoral education, academic profession, higher education policy.
Dr. Heejin Lim has received her Ph.D. degree from Seoul National University in 2018, and is currently working as a Research professor at Korea National University of Education. Her research interest areas include doctoral education, internationalization, student and academic mobility.
Dr. Yunkyung Min completed her Ph.D. degree from Seoul National University in 2019 and currently working as a Associate Research Fellow at Korean Educational Development Institute(KEDI). Her research area is higher education governance and liberal arts education for undergraduates.
Dr. Youngeun An completed her Ph.D. degree from Seoul National University in 2020 and currently working as a research fellow at Seoul Education Research & Information Institute, Korea. Her research area is educational policy and school effect.
Dr. Hyejoo Jung completed her Ph.D. degree from Seoul National University in 2020 and currently working as a Associate Research Fellow at Korean Educational Development Institute(KEDI). Her research area is academics in formative career stages, comparative study of higher education in East Asia.
Dr. Jinkwon Lee completed his Ph.D degree from Seoul National University in 2021 and currently working as a Associate Research Fellow at Korean Educational Development Institute(KEDI). His research areas include higher education policy and finance, publicness of universities.
Dr. Jae Woon Hwang completed his Ph.D degree from Seoul National University in 2021 and currently working as a Research Professor at the Center for Future Education Research at Ewha Womans University. His research interest areas include teacher education, school principal and knowledge production.
Dr. Chengshi LI completed her Ph.D. degree from Seoul National University in 2022 and currently working as a Assistant Professor at Gachon University, Korea. Her research interest areas include Comparative Higher Education, Higher Education Policy and Governance.
Dr. Xin LI obtained her Ph.D. degree from Seoul National University in 2022 and currently working as a assistant professor at Hiroshima University, Japan. Her research interest areas include higher education governance, research management, and academic profession.
Dr. Hye Yeon Park completed her Ph.D degree from Seoul National University in 2022 and currently working as BK Assistant Professor at Head Office of BrainKorea21 FOUR Seoul National University. Her research interest areas include higher education policy and system, graduate education, and university organization.
Dr. Anggia Utami Dewi completed her Ph.D degree from Seoul National University in 2022 and currently working as an assistant professor at Universitas Padjadjaran, Indonesia. Her research interests include globalization and internationalization of higher education, also higher education policy and governance.
  • Affiliated Members

As well as the core members, CHEKs has affiliated members who are currently participating collaborative research with the core members. CHEKs emphasizes its wide range of research topics and their academic and social implications in order to attract individual researchers to join the CHEKs team. CHEKs will also actively link researchers to each other to enable academic collaboration. CHEKs welcomes colleagues to join the CHEKs networks by filling out the form. Members will receive regular forum and conference information, publications, and news letters.

Forum & Conference

CHEKs hosts an international forum every Fall to develop and exchange research ideas through international collaborations. The invited presenters are distinguished scholars in knowledge and higher education studies.

Books and Journal Papers

This site introduces books and journal articles regarding Knowledge and Higher Education Studies. If you would like to share your publications with CHEKs members, please send your book and/or article information with abstract. We encourage our colleagues to share their research with CHEKs members. This will increase the impact of our work and contribute to academic society and to the world at large.
